Recapturing the legacy

Glory of Geographical Indications

India is a land of treasure, endowed with rich natural resources of agricultural products, cultural heritage, and legacy of variety of artisans that are source of goods of high economic value. Due to numerous factors, the benefit of this endowment is not reaped to its full extent. Among the numerous factors, non-protection or non-enforcement of such legacy through available means like GI (Geographical Indication) rights is a prominent reason.

It has become important to understand that GI registration excludes the unauthorized persons from gaining wrongful advantage. GI is even more important to protect the consumers by assuring them of the authenticity of the product and making sure they are not deceived by persons passing off goods unrelated to the said geographical area. The primary objective of GI, i.e. benefit sharing and upliftment of local communities gets defeated when protection of GI is undermined.

In this session, we take you through the glimpse of GI registration journey along with the success stories of some GIs, which set an example about the importance of getting a GI registered. We invite you to attend the session that will be a bioscope of GI concept and its importance, more importantly in the light of #VocalForLocal and #AtmanirbharBharat.
