Goa’s Mankurad Mango (also known as Mankur) is one of the most popular and preferred mango varieties in Goa. The reason behind its popularity is its exceptionally sweet taste and melting texture, earning the undisputed title of "King of Goan Mangoes." The history of mango cultivation in Goa is long, it is believed that grafting techniques for mangoes were introduced by the Portuguese during their rule in Goa, and they also encouraged mango cultivation for various uses. The variety originally found in Goa was named 'malcorado', meaning 'poor skin color' in Portuguese, because it retains a greenish hue even when fully ripe. Over time, the word evolved into 'mankurad', and as a distinctly Goan variety, it eventually became known as the 'Goa Mankur'.

Goa Mankurad ranks just after the famous Goan cashew in terms of area under cultivation. The climatic and geographical conditions prevailing in Goa have given the unique characteristic. The fruits begin to ripen in April-May, coinciding with summer and school holidays, making it a favorite table fruit for Goan families. The juicy, sweet flesh provides instant energy in the summer heat and helps maintain the body’s fluid balance. Mangoes provide variety, flavor, and essential vitamins.

A key factor in the quality of Goa Mankurad mangoes is timely harvesting, specifically at a particular stage of maturity before ripening, then allowing them to ripen properly. Experienced harvesters select only fully mature mangoes by observing changes in the shoulder and stem/node, and pick them carefully by hand or with a mango harvester With its long cultivation history, unique climate, and superior quality, this mango has been recognized with a GI (Geographical Indication) tag by the Government of India. Now, only mangoes originating from Goa can be sold as Mankurad mangoes, helping to sustain its growth and ensure that genuine farmers benefit from its reputation.
