Tarkashi, a renowned art form from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, involves using brass wire inlays on dark sheesham wood. Initially utilized for khadaous in households where leather was deemed unhygienic, tarkashi has evolved to adorn furniture and boxes with intricate designs and meticulous craftsmanship. Wood carving is extensively practiced throughout Uttar Pradesh, notably in cities like Saharanpur, Nagina, and Lucknow, where both traditional hand tools and modern equipment such as motorized lathes and jig-saws are employed. This craft not only preserves cultural traditions but also supports local artisans by providing employment opportunities.
