Moradabad is one of the major cities in the western part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, located on the banks of the Ramganga River. It is famous for handmade art, whether it is showpieces like artistic brass items or wearables like jewellery. It is often called the ‘Peetal Nagri’ or the Brass City. In the year 2014, Moradabad Metal Craft received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which highlights its uniqueness and geographical origin.
The uniqueness of Moradabad metal craft is in the Ram Ganga River sand and the inlet of the mold used for metal casting. The sand is so thin and soft that it helps in forming the perfect binding material used in the metal casting process. The Mughal era is where the rich history of these handicrafts begins. An influential handicraft niche was established by a small group of workers. Over time, new products were introduced, and now metals like iron, aluminium, nickel, and silver are also used in metal handicraft items. Currently, the major economy of the city still depends on these craftsmen. They do all this production in their tiny, congested workshops. Final goods created by these artisans were sold in local markets in India and exported to international markets.
The technique of making metal crafts is extremely difficult, time-consuming, and rigorous. There are multiple stages in the process, like hand-beating, etching, engraving, and polishing. The craftsmen deliver an insane amount of hard work, patience, and creativity. Multiple tools are used, such as hammers and chisels, but major work is done by hand, power, and mind precision. Metal is heated to make it soft, so that artisans can give it a shape by hand or mold. In the final stage, they polish it to make it look shiny or paint it to create various artistic designs. After all this, a final product came into existence: raw metal to an eye-catching handicraft.
