Assam is home to three types of silkworms: mulberry, eri, and muga. Muga silk contains fibroin, a core protein, and sericin, a protective waxy layer. Traditional Assamese attire, Mekhela-Chadar, is crafted from this silk, featuring a loin cloth (Mekhela) and a wrapper cloth (Chadar). Muga silk sarees range from 5.5 to 6.25 meters in length and 115 cm in width, with plain fabrics available in widths from 45 cm to 115 cm for various applications.
