Eri Silk / Indi Silk

Download

A fabric we discovered from nature, “Eri Silk” represents the indigenous intellect of people from Assam. Also known as Ahimsa silk or "peace silk,". Now honoured with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, this unique fabric is making its way to the limelight.

Eri Silk is way different from other silk fabrics. It has so many qualities; it is soft and breathable. Unique matte finish is another quality that makes it more valuable. Perfect for any hot or cold season. It is also durable enough to use for years. Sarees, scarfs, stole, and many other luxury clothing pieces are made from Eri silk. People these days are curious to explore more eco-friendly options, and Eri Silk is one such sustainable option, which is perfect to replace any other machine made fabric.

Transformation: Silkworm to Eri Silk

Eri Silkworm Rearing : Huge numbers of Eri silkworms are fed leaves, so they can easily reach the cocoon stage Metamorphosis.

Collection of Cocoons : After the complete process of Metamorphosis, cultivators collect the cocoons.

Gum Cleaning : Silkworm cocoons are cleaned using soda to remove dirt and gum inside the cocoons.

Spinning : A spinning tool, “Takli,” is used to spin the fiber of cocoons. These cocoons are open-ended, so reeling is not possible.

Weaving : To make the final piece of clothing, weavers weave the spined yarn.

After months of processing, a premium fabric came into existence. We often ignore the hard work and thinking behind these creations. For many, Eri Silk is just fabric, but for people of Assam, the value of Eri Silk is much higher. The families, workers, and weavers associated with Eri Silk are proud of their creation. Eri Silk is as beautiful as the Eri Silk Moth, Stunning and mesmerizing! We should praise these sustainable creations and honour the hands behind this incredible craftsmanship.
