Every Indian household uses turmeric in various forms and cuisines. Not just in cooking, Turmeric is also associated with our ceremonies and rituals. We often use regular turmeric, which is easily available in the market, but there is an Ultimate version of regular turmeric known as Lakadong turmeric. Found in the beautiful hills of Meghalaya (West Jaintia Hills), it is renowned for its quality, not just as a spice; it holds much value for the people of Meghalaya. For centuries, this agricultural gold has provided a livelihood to thousands of families.
Location : Regular turmeric is cultivated all over the world, but Lakdong turmeric is only found in Meghalaya.
Visible Difference : Lakadong turmeric's bright yellow color is noticeable; we can judge which one is Lakadong and which one is regular turmeric by judging the color
Smell, Potency, and Taste : Lakadong turmeric has a very sharp smell, strong potency and bitter taste. A small amount of Lakadong works better than a spoon of regular turmeric.
Component and Health Benefits : Curcumin is the major component found in turmeric. Lakadong has a high curcumin Component (12%), which is 400% more than regular turmeric. Turmeric is beneficial for detoxing the body from dust and pollution, fighting harmful bacteria, and is good for recovery.
All the differences make this turmeric unique; its origin makes it culturally important, and for the people of Meghalaya, it is a matter of pride and identity. For global-level recognition and advertisement of this agricultural gold, our government recognized Lakadonn turmeric with a Geographical Indication tag in 2024. GI helps facilitate people associated with Lakadong Turmeric by safeguarding business, promoting trade, and creating better opportunities. We should also keep appreciating those farmers who dedicate their lives to cultivating this golden spice that nourishes us all.
