As we researched the origin of this amazing craft, we couldn’t find an exact timeline, but most data say Kashmir’s Paper Machie craft came into existence during the 14th century or 15th century. The oldest paper machie can be found in the Shah Hamdan Mosque (Srinagar). A perfect place to explore and understand the rich history of Kashmir Paper Machie work.
The art involves two main stages : Sakhtsazi (moulding) and Naqashi (painting).
Pulp Making and Mixing : Wastepaper is soaked and pounded into a uniform paste, then mixed with rice glue to make a plaster like substance.
Shaping the craft : The plaster is poured into the different moulds. When the moulds dried out, craftsmen carefully removed the craft from the moulds.
Finishing : Multiple pieces join together to make one single craft. For a smooth paint or artwork, the surface of the craft is polished and corrected by various tools.
Naqashi is an art form where artisans draw their art on the craft. In Paper Machie, artisans used natural colours to paint various designs and patterns. All these designs look rich and elegant. Most designs are inspired by Mughal art and other designs, such as Paisley, floral, and geometric patterns.
The numbers of Paper Machie craftsmen are on a decline; modern consumers rarely know about old crafts as these kinds of craft don't have the budget to promote themselves. A small group of craftsmen is still making boxes, bowls, vases, and other decorative and functional items. In order to safeguard this century old craft, the government recognised Kashmir Paper Machie with a Geographic Indication (GI) tag, this recognition not only promotes this craft but also provides fair trade options, protecting the craft from cheap imitation. All these efforts helped the craft to make a comeback in the modern market.
