Maddalam is considered to be a divine instrument forming an essential part of temple rituals. It is known for its meticulous selection of jackfruit wood for the body and calfskin for the drumheads which are tightly laced to create a deep resonant sound. The balance of bass and treble in the Maddalam combined with its intricate rhythmic patterns, gives it a unique place in Kerala’s cultural heritage.
